What Is Between Steps About?
Between Steps is a university romantic comedy centered around two students who cross paths through their work in a robotics program.
The two protagonists collaborate in a laboratory, where academic responsibilities and teamwork gradually bring them closer.
At first, their relationship is connected to experiments, projects and university life. However, spending more time together creates opportunities for their professional partnership to develop into something more personal.
The drama uses the robotics laboratory and university environment as the backdrop for a romance between two young people who are still discovering their own ambitions, personalities and feelings.
Rather than relying only on dramatic romantic situations, Between Steps is expected to explore the small moments that can turn a simple friendship or partnership into something deeper.
Between Steps Story
The story revolves around Park Min Jae and Im Yujin, two university students connected through a robotics program.
Their collaboration puts them in the same environment, allowing their personalities and different approaches to university life to gradually emerge.
As they work together, the boundaries between academic teamwork and personal feelings begin to become less clear.
This creates the central romantic-comedy setup of the series:
Can two students working side by side in a robotics laboratory keep their relationship strictly professional when their feelings begin to change?
The university setting also gives the drama plenty of room for friendships, competition, career ambitions, personal growth and humorous misunderstandings.
Between Steps Cast
Choo Young Woo as Park Min Jae
Choo Young Woo takes the role of Park Min Jae, one of the two central characters.
His character is a university student involved in the robotics program, where he works alongside Im Yujin.
Park Min Jae's relationship with Yujin forms an important part of the drama's romantic storyline.
Choo Young Woo is particularly well known among K-drama viewers for his performances in youth and romance-oriented productions, making his casting an appealing part of Between Steps.
Kim So Hyun as Im Yujin
Kim So Hyun stars as Im Yujin, the other central figure in the story.
Yujin is a university student whose work in the robotics laboratory brings her into close contact with Min Jae.
Her developing relationship with Min Jae is expected to provide much of the drama's emotional and comedic energy.
Kim So Hyun has established herself as one of the most recognizable actresses in Korean television, and her pairing with Choo Young Woo is one of the key attractions of Between Steps.
Choo Young Woo and Kim So Hyun's Chemistry
One of the biggest reasons viewers may be interested in Between Steps is the pairing of Choo Young Woo and Kim So Hyun.
The drama places both characters in a situation where they cannot simply avoid one another. Their university project requires cooperation, communication and time together.
That setup can naturally create the classic romantic-comedy moments that fans enjoy:
- Awkward first interactions
- Unexpected misunderstandings
- Working late together
- Academic competition
- Gradually developing trust
- Friendship turning into romance
- Jealousy and emotional confusion
- Cute campus moments
The robotics laboratory also gives their relationship a different backdrop from the usual Korean campus romance.
Why Is Robotics Important in Between Steps?
The robotics setting is one of the most interesting elements of the drama.
University romance dramas often focus on classrooms, clubs, sports teams or part-time jobs. Between Steps, however, places its protagonists in a robotics program and laboratory.
This creates a setting where romance develops alongside:
Technology + teamwork + university life + ambition + relationships
The characters are not simply meeting by chance. Their academic work repeatedly puts them together, giving their relationship time to develop naturally.
The laboratory can also become a space where the characters reveal different sides of themselves away from the larger university environment.
Between Steps Episode Count
Between Steps is planned as a 12-episode Korean romantic comedy.
The 12-episode format gives the drama enough space to develop the central relationship while exploring the university lives and personal ambitions of its characters.
The series can potentially follow the relationship from an initial collaboration through friendship and eventually into romance, while keeping the lighter tone expected from a romantic comedy.

What Makes Between Steps Different?
The Korean drama combines a familiar campus romance formula with a less common setting.
Instead of focusing exclusively on typical university activities, the story puts its characters inside a robotics laboratory.
That allows the series to explore romance alongside:
University Life
The characters are still students trying to navigate classes, projects, friendships and their future careers.
Technology
Robotics provides the central academic environment and gives the drama a distinctive identity.
Romance
The main relationship develops gradually as the protagonists spend more time together.
Comedy
Because Min Jae and Yujin have to work together, their changing relationship can create plenty of awkward and funny situations.
Personal Growth
University is a period when young people begin making decisions about their careers and relationships. Those changes can become an important part of the story.
Is Between Steps a Romance Drama?
Yes. Between Steps is primarily a romantic comedy.
The central relationship between Park Min Jae and Im Yujin is expected to drive the story, while their university and robotics environment provides the setting.
Fans who enjoy Korean campus romances, youthful relationships and character-driven romantic comedies may want to add this drama to their October 2026 watchlist.

Between Steps: What To Expect
The combination of romance and robotics is arguably the most intriguing aspect of the series.
The drama has the potential to use its laboratory setting not merely as decoration but as a meaningful part of the characters' relationship.
Working on difficult projects can test patience. Competing academic goals can create tension. Spending long hours together can turn unfamiliar classmates into close friends.
And sometimes, friendship can become something neither person expected.
That is where the romantic-comedy element of Between Steps comes into play.
